Weekly Challenge: Shop Healthy

Submitted by Lisa Johnson on July 10, 2010 – 5:12 pmNo Comment

Diane tried out a new market with local and planet friendly claims this week with mixed success.  While she’s found a great new place for meat she’s still looking for a mecca of healthy fruits and vegetables.  We thought we’d pass the experiment along to you.  Try shopping somewhere that offers a range of local, sustainable or organic food and see how you do.

The Basics

Go online and look for a place to purchase something organic/local/sustainable (any combination will do).  I keep hearing about this great meat place two towns over from me so I’m going to try that place.  But maybe you want to try raw milk and you can look for a dairy farmer who sells it directly.  You can make an adventure out of it, bring the whole family and see what you find.  Feel free to report to us on how it went.

The Level Level

Opt for  purchasing enough food at a new location to cover two entire meals or visit two different vendors to get an array of food.  I could go to the venerable Allandale Farm, for instance, for fruits, veggies and fresh eggs and to Dewars for my meat.

The Gold Standard

This is big.  Go whole hog (pun intended) and buy into a farm CSA.  The farm will provide local deliveries or pick up of whatever it is they produce.  There are fruit & veg CSAs, meat CSAs, even dairy CSAs.  Do an internet search for your area and see what’s available.  I’m on the waiting list for a pork CSA near my home.  Hoping that sucker comes up soon.

That’s it.  Let us know how you do.  We’d love to share your find with our readers.

Eat well,

Lisa
