Portion Plates: No Excuses for Portion Control

Submitted by Lisa Johnson on June 15, 2010 – 2:00 am5 Comments

This is a great Twitter discovery for me.  A little company that produces plates with graphics on them to show you how to divvy up your meals into the proper proportions; 50% fruits & veggies, 25% protein and 25% healthy starch.

I’ve been saying for years this is how you should divide your meals, I literally whooped when I found them!  Here’s what I’ve gotten out of them so far …

  1. The plate is the appropriate size for dinner.  I showed it to a few people at the health club I work at and they said, it looks like a salad plate.  Nope!  This is about the same size as a typical dinner plate in the 1940s.  (Yes, our plate size has gotten larger with our girth!)
  2. I cheat with starches.  I definitely eyeball a bit more rice or potato on my plate when I don’t have my little lines drawn out for me.  I know I’ve saved some serious calories right there.
  3. My son likes it and he’s learning from it.  My son is a starch fiend, he’d live on mac & cheese and pizza and pasta if I let him.  With the plate in front of him he can’t argue with me because “someone else said it,” not his Mom.
  4. Having the portion sizes there also helps me be more accurate when I’m eating away from my plate.  I’m doing a better job of guestimating then I used to.

So I recommend The Portion Plate (Adult)
(Amazon affiliate link), when I showed it to some clients of mine they all asked for 3 or 4 so they could hand them out to friends and relatives … The Portion Plate folks might be onto something.   BTW, I received 2 adult plates and 2 placemats from the company to review.  The plates are $21.99, a deal considering the return on investment.
