My restaurant days began at 16 when I was a waitress/ice cream scooper at Friendly’s in White City, Shrewsbury. At the time, our store was the second busiest in the chain. Only the original location, with screaming kids insisting on purple ice cream and extra jimmies, had a larger crowd. Yes, we called chocolate sprinkles jimmies back then.
I loved working on the “cab” where I would scoop and scoop in relative peace putting together every conceivable ice cream concoction. To this day, I make the best ice cream shakes (and Fribbles!) of anyone I know.I adapted this recipe from my days at Friendly’s. It’s also dead easy with only two ingredients, and you can whip it up in minutes.
I’d like to give a shoutout to the Friendly’s crew back then, I crowd-sourced the recipe on my Facebook page with four former employees. Thanks for the little trip down memory lane.
- 3 scoops orange sherbet
- 1/2 cup orange soda (we used Izze’s clementine)
- In a blender, place the sherbert
- Add the 1/2 cup of orange soda
- Blend and serve!
Cooking Tips: At Friendly’s we used soda water and a shot of vanilla, so feel free to do it that way if you prefer. Most people don’t have vanilla syrup hanging around their cupboards. Also, this concoction serves one to two people, just keep doubling the recipe as needed. It is sweet, a little goes a long way.
Of course, sherbet coolers come in many forms, how about raspberry soda and raspberry sherbet? That would be quite tasty wouldn’t it? This really is one of those recipes that hits the spot on a hot summer day.
What is a Fribble?
I know someone will ask me. A Fribble contains ice milk instead of ice cream. However, after several ownership changes Fribbles are now made with ice cream and basically just a shake. To the executive who decided to axe ice milk shame on you! Ice milk is ice cream made with milk instead of heavy cream. It has fewer calories than regular ice cream, but low-fat ice cream replaced it when it came onto the market in the 1990s.
What’s your orange sherbet cooler recipe? Do you have other variations? Any great ice cream shake recipes? Feel free to share below in the comments.
