Book Review: Skinny Bitch

Submitted by Lisa Johnson on June 16, 2010 – 2:11 am4 Comments

I picked up the book, Skinny Bitch, (affiliate link) expecting to make fun of it.  Two California babes lecturing me about why I didn’t have a Hollywood body.  I quickly realized that was not the case.

This well-researched and snarky book gives it to you straight.  They explain things like why soda can be so detrimental to your health, how nutrasweet reacts with your body and why you should avoid it, and how to make smarter choices.  After reading some of their scary statistics I started checking their sources expecting it to be a large variety of earthy-crunchy organizations.  Nope, most of the studies cited are funded by organizations like the USDA and National Institute of Health.  I was impressed and I’m not easily impressed.

They advocate a vegan diet which is not something that I’d ever do.  But after reading their book I quit Diet Coke cold turkey, and immediately dropped 3 pounds without changing anything else in my diet.

It’s worth a look, but as I warn my clients, be prepared to make some diet changes as soon as you pick up the book.  You’ll feel compelled to do so.

  • My wife bought the book and never read it. I picked it up and couldn’t put it down. Great book. If you want to change someone’s life, give them a copy of this book with a copy of the Food, Inc. DVD.

I’m like you, Lisa, I could never go full vegan. But you can bet that when I get back to the States, my meat consumption is going to be strictly free range and grass fed/grass finished.

Dave it’s in the States it takes a bit of work too. I have to admit I get lazy and buy all my meat at Whole Foods and hope they choose well for me. If I was really, really into it I’d be into meat CSAs and the whole bit. But with a more than full-time job and a family it’s just not possible … L–

Thanks for the review…I’ve been thinking about picking this up but the reviews have seem quite mixed. I agree about going full on Vegan, I don’t think that’s something I’d ever do but I am trying to go to a mostly plant based diet. I think I’ll give this a read!

Renae, there is some pretty good info in the book and it’s definitely a take the parts you like and leave behind the parts you don’t. Let me know how you like it.
